Plymouth's First Century: Innovators and
Industry
By Elizabeth Kelley Kerstens
The year 2002 marked
the 175th anniversary of the founding of Plymouth Township in
Michigan Territory. The first settlers were true pioneers, carving a
living out of the wilderness and working together to establish a
community. Farms and farmers were the backbone of the community
until after the Civil War when two railroads intersected in the
Village of Plymouth. The railroads brought many opportunities to the
area, and helped spread the products invented by an innovative
population. Plymouth, Michigan's First Century: Innovators and
Industry contains more than 200 images from the Plymouth Historical
Museum and from the collections of some of Plymouth's current
residents. You'll see the township blossom from farms and mills to a
cohesive community of inventors and patriots. Early images of the
main business block of Plymouth Village are reminiscent of the Wild
West; later images depict a vibrant community, as it remains today.

Baseball Fever
By Peter Morris
In this well-researched study of Michigan
baseball from the 1930s to the 1870s, baseball scholar Peter Morris
offers many answers. Drawing on such sources as personal memoirs,
period photographs, and an extensive, often hilarious variety of
newspaper accounts, he paints a vivid portrait of a game that was
widely--if erratically--played well before the Civil War and
gradually evolved from an informal amusement into an activity for
local groups of young men and finally into a serious, organized
sport.

Elegant Stitches
By Judith Baker Montano
Silk ribbon embroidery uses many of the
same stitches as more traditional crewel embroidery, but the unique
qualities of the ribbon make for a very different look. This
beautiful book (conveniently spiral bound to lie flat when working)
offers a comprehensive stitch guide and good coverage of all the
basics. Each stitch is given a clear diagram, and many also include
color photos of a detail featuring that stitch. In addition, Judith
Baker Montano presents charming descriptions of what inspired her
lovely, elaborate finished pieces, which she calls "free-form
stitchery."
